Paolo Vitelli founded Azimut in Turin in 1969, starting out by chartering sailboats before moving into yacht distribution and then design and building during the 1970s. In 1985 the company bought Benetti, the Viareggio superyacht builder, and the two now make up the Azimut|Benetti group, which is still controlled by the Vitelli family. Azimut's headquarters and main yard are in Avigliana, near Turin.
Azimut builds motor yachts in several families, including the Fly flybridge models, the S sport yachts, the Magellano long-range cruisers, Seadeck, Verve, Atlantis and the larger Grande range, from about 12 meters to more than 38 meters. Production is split among several Italian yards and one in Brazil. When comparing used boats, it helps to know which line a yacht comes from, since a Magellano and an S model of similar length are designed for quite different kinds of use.
