What Jupiter Is

This stretch, Jupiter up through Hobe Sound to Stuart, is where South Florida stops being a city waterfront and becomes a river system. It keeps a distinctive fleet: centre consoles and convertibles for the fishing, and trawlers and cruisers staged for the Okeechobee Waterway across to the Gulf.

Stuart calls itself the sailfish capital, and the inventory reflects it. Between Jupiter and Stuart there are usually more boats listed than in Palm Beach, which surprises buyers who have not looked.

The trade-off is water. Jupiter Inlet is shallow and moves, and the Okeechobee Waterway has a controlling depth and a fixed bridge clearance that decide whether a given boat can use it at all. Both are worth understanding before you buy for this stretch.

Inlets and Where Boats Lie

Jupiter Inlet and St Lucie Inlet

Jupiter Inlet is shoal-prone and the sand moves; St Lucie is the more dependable of the two and the usual choice for anything of size.

Jupiter Questions

Can my boat use the Okeechobee Waterway?

It depends on two numbers: her draft against the waterway's controlling depth, and her air draft against the fixed bridge on the route. Both are published and both change. The controlling depth in particular moves with lake level and dredging. Check the current figures for the season you plan to transit, not last year's, and if she is close on either, plan the alternative round the Keys.

Is Jupiter Inlet safe for a larger boat?

It is shoal-prone and the sand moves with the weather, so local knowledge and a rising tide matter more than they do elsewhere. Owners of larger boats on this stretch commonly use St Lucie Inlet instead, which is deeper and more dependable. It is a genuine consideration when deciding where to keep her.

Why are there so many boats listed in Stuart?

It is a real market rather than an overflow. Stuart sits at the ocean end of the Okeechobee Waterway, it has the sailfish fishery, and it has yard capacity and reasonable rates, so boats are both kept and worked on here in numbers. Buyers who only search Fort Lauderdale and Miami routinely miss it.

Do you cover this area from Fort Lauderdale?

Yes. It is an hour and a half up the coast, our brokers are aboard for every showing here as anywhere else, and through the cooperative we can show you any listing on this stretch whoever holds it.
