About Bavaria
Winfried Herrmann made PVC windows in Giebelstadt, near Würzburg, and sailed. In 1978 he and the charter broker Josef Meltl worked out that the automation in the window factory could be pointed at boats, and Bavaria Yachtbau was the result - the first German yard to put yachts on a proper production line. The first boat was the 850, seven and eight metres, aimed squarely at families who wanted to sail rather than at anybody who wanted to race.
It worked on an industrial scale: by 2006 the yard was turning out around 3,500 boats a year with 600 people, and Bavaria is still the largest builder in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. The boats are well engineered, competitively priced and plentiful - which on the used market means real choice and honest pricing. Sail and power both, plus catamarans. Check the keel bolts and the rudder bearing on the older sailing boats, as you would on any production yacht of that vintage.
