About Bayliner
Bayliner was founded by Orin Edson in 1957 and became the biggest boatbuilder on earth by doing one thing relentlessly - taking cost out without taking the boat away. Edson sold to Brunswick in 1986 for $425 million, which made Brunswick the largest pleasure-boat producer in the world, and he remains the only self-made billionaire the industry has produced.
The modern range is small runabouts and deck boats, but the 1980s and 1990s brought Bayliner motor yachts up to the high fifties - and those are what turn up on the brokerage market at forty feet and above. Be clear-eyed about them: they were built to a price, and a thirty-year-old boat built to a price rewards a hard survey. Stringers, transom, fuel tanks and the wiring are where the money hides. A good one, properly maintained, is a great deal of space for very little money; a bad one is a project.
