About Cheoy Lee
Cheoy Lee was founded in Shanghai in 1870 by the Lo family and moved to Hong Kong in 1936. It built steel and wooden commercial craft first and began building sailing and motor yachts in the mid-1950s. The main yard has been at Doumen, Zhuhai, on the Pearl River since 1999, when the company left Penny's Bay to make way for Hong Kong Disneyland. It is still run by the family.
The yard's long run in fiberglass means Cheoy Lees turn up across a wide span of years and types, from 1970s sailing yachts to modern motor yachts and commercial hulls. Age spread that wide makes the survey the whole story: two boats of the same model a decade apart can be entirely different propositions, and the older ones reward a surveyor who knows early GRP.
