About Contender
Contender was founded in 1984 by Joe Neber, who grew up fishing and diving off Miami Beach and wanted a boat that would take the punishment offshore fishing hands out. The Classic 25 he launched that year is still the boat the brand is measured by, and he still owns the company.
The range runs roughly 25 to 44 feet and the boats are semi-custom, which is the thing to understand when comparing two: layout, power and rigging vary considerably between hulls of the same model. Contenders are bought by people who fish hard, so hours and rigging history matter more than cosmetics - and everything is still built in Florida, at Homestead and now St Lucie County.
