About DeFever
Arthur DeFever spent the 1950s designing long-range tuna clippers out of San Diego - working boats that stayed at sea for weeks. Sailors watching those hulls go out in weather that kept everything else in port asked him to draw them a pleasure yacht on the same lines. Six were built to start with, and the trawler yacht as we understand it followed from there. More than 3,800 vessels were built to his designs before he died in 2013, buried at sea.
A DeFever is not a model, it is a design bought by a series of yards: the early Passagemaker 34 and 40 came out of Jensen Marine in California, most of the rest from CTF and Sen Koh in Kaohsiung, and later hulls from mainland China. They are semi-displacement, so they will hurry if you ask, but the point is that they will keep going all day at eight knots on very little fuel. Which yard built her matters as much as the model number - ask, and survey accordingly.
