About Hatteras
Hatteras was founded in 1959 in High Point, North Carolina, by textile executive Willis Slane, who wanted a fishing boat that could handle the rough water off Cape Hatteras. Naval architect Jack Hargrave designed its first boat, the 41-foot Knit Wits, which was built in fiberglass at a time when that was new for a boat of its size. After AMF bought the company in 1972, operations moved to New Bern, and Hatteras went through several corporate owners before Bass Pro's White River Marine Group acquired it in May 2021.
For decades Hatteras built both sportfishing convertibles and large motor yachts, and both turn up regularly on the brokerage market. Under White River, the company has narrowed its focus to sportfishing boats and announced a new generation of models in 2024. Buyers looking at older Hatteras motor yachts should weigh the age of engines, systems and interiors, since refits vary widely in scope and quality.
