About Little Harbor
Ted Hood made sails first - Hood Sails, Marblehead, 1952 - and won the America's Cup twice, once as a skipper and once as a designer. Little Harbor followed in 1959, named for the part of Marblehead where he had moved the loft. Taking his cue from Carleton Mitchell's Finisterre, he drew beamy, shallow-draft, heavy-displacement centerboard cruising yachts: seakindly, fast on a reach, and with far more volume below than the racing boats of the day.
In 1986 he moved the whole operation to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, turning a wartime navy fuel depot into one of the largest yacht yards on the East Coast. The boats were built in Taiwan, first at yards Hood knew and later at his own. Hinckley bought the company in 1999. What is on the market now is a 1980s or 1990s Hood centerboarder, and the good ones are still among the most capable cruising yachts you can buy for the money - check the centerboard pennant and trunk first, always.
