About Merritt
Franklin and Ennis Merritt left Long Island in 1947, bought ten acres on the Intracoastal at Pompano Beach, and opened Merritt Boat & Engine Works in 1948 - originally just to look after their own charter boats and the local drift fleet. They started building in 1955. Their sons Buddy and Allen took it on, and after Buddy died in 1971 Roy, Allen's son, took over the yard he had worked in since he was a teenager.
The family is still there and the output is tiny by design - cold-molded custom sportfishermen, built slowly, for owners who wait. Along with Rybovich, Merritt is the name that defines the Florida custom sportfish, and the boats are as much a part of the local fishing culture as the tournaments. They almost never come up for sale; when one does it usually goes quietly, and the buyer is generally somebody the yard already knows. If you want one, start the conversation early.
