About Palmer Johnson
Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack started building at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in 1918 - wooden boats for work and for pleasure, on Lake Michigan, for decades. The company moved to aluminium in the middle of the century and became one of the very few American yards building serious custom yachts in metal, sail as well as power.
The SportYacht series of the early 2000s is what most people picture now: aluminium and carbon, a hull shape nobody else was drawing, and a look that divides opinion and is impossible to mistake. The Sturgeon Bay yard closed in 2015 after its last delivery and building moved to the Netherlands in 2017. On the brokerage market the range is wide - century-old classics, 1980s aluminium sailing yachts and carbon SportYachts are all Palmer Johnsons - so the era matters more than the name.
