Francis Lapp, a French Alsatian who had built an electrical manufacturing business in Poland, bought a catamaran, liked it, and started a charter agency. His clients kept asking for something larger and more comfortable, he went looking, and found nothing on the market worth having. So in 2002 he founded Sunreef at Gdansk to build it himself.

The Sunreef 74 launched in 2003 - the first 74-foot oceangoing luxury catamaran with a flybridge - and the industry's view of what a large multihull could be shifted from that point. The yard now builds sail and power catamarans from 18 to 61 metres, much of it genuinely custom, and its Eco line with integrated solar panels and electric drive is the most serious attempt anyone has made at that in this size.
