About Trumpy
John Trumpy was a Norwegian naval architect who joined John H. Mathis & Company at Camden, New Jersey, in 1910. He became president in 1939, the name changed to Trumpy & Sons, and in 1947 the yard moved to Annapolis. More than three hundred yachts carry the Mathis-Trumpy signature, built for the DuPonts, the Chryslers and Howard Hughes, with submarine chasers in between during the war.
The Sequoia is the famous one - drawn by Trumpy in 1925 and the presidential yacht from Hoover through to Carter. The yard closed in 1973, killed by fiberglass. What survives is wooden, cared for by people who know exactly what they have, and traded within a small and knowledgeable circle. Buying one is a decision about stewardship: the right surveyor, the right yard, and a realistic view of what a wooden yacht costs to keep. They are also among the most beautiful boats ever built in America.
