West Bay SonShip was founded in 1967 at Delta, British Columbia, by Ben and Leidy Vermeulen, on six and a half acres of the Fraser River where it runs into the Strait of Georgia. It is still a family business - Wes Vermeulen runs it, his brother Bas runs production, and his wife Lynda has always headed interior design, which is unusual and shows in the boats.

West Bay built semi-custom and custom raised-pilothouse motor yachts, mostly between 58 and 100-odd feet, for Pacific Northwest owners who cruise the Inside Passage to Alaska. That is demanding water and the boats reflect it: heavy build, real pilothouses, serious heating and insulation, big tanks. New building has largely wound down but the yard operates. On the brokerage market they are strong value against a comparable Florida boat, and the interiors are noticeably better than the segment average.
