Why Americans Keep Choosing Life on the Water, and Why Florida Leads

Every year, tens of millions of Americans spend their best days on a boat. The pandemic years brought a rush of new boaters, and while new-boat sales have since settled back to normal, the lifestyle itself hasn't gone anywhere: the latest figures show record numbers of people fishing in salt water, more than 11 million registered boats in the country, and a used-boat market that sells hundreds of thousands of boats a year.

As a Fort Lauderdale brokerage, we see the reasons first-hand. Here are the numbers behind the boating lifestyle, what keeps people coming back to it, and how to find the boat that fits the way you want to live.

The numbers behind the lifestyle

• About 85 million Americans go boating each year, by the National Marine Manufacturers Association's estimate.
• Recreational boating generates $230 billion a year in economic activity, supporting more than 812,000 jobs and over 36,000 businesses (NMMA, 2023 study).
• Boating and fishing are America's biggest conventional outdoor pastime. In the government's own accounts, they added $38.4 billion to the economy in 2024. More than any other traditional outdoor activity (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis).
• There were 11.67 million registered recreational boats in the United States in 2024 (U.S. Coast Guard).
• 57 million Americans went fishing in 2025, and a record 15.5 million of them fished in salt water (American Sportfishing Association and Outdoor Foundation).
• About 80% of the boats sold each year are pre-owned. Nearly 860,000 used boats changed hands in 2024 (NMMA).

Florida is where America boats

On almost every measure, Florida comes first.

• More registered boats than any other state: 1,027,742 in 2025, according to Florida's vessel registration figures. Broward County alone has more than 44,000.
• The biggest boating economy: $31.3 billion a year and 109,000 jobs (NMMA, 2023 study).
• The biggest boat market: $5.75 billion in retail boating sales in 2025, first in the nation (NMMA).
• The biggest share of outdoor recreation: Florida's boating and fishing contributed $4.4 billion in 2024, more than any other state (BEA).

Fort Lauderdale is at the center of it. The recreational marine industry in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties produced $18.5 billion in output and supported nearly 142,000 jobs in the most recent regional study (Marine Industries Association of South Florida, 2022 data). And every fall the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which bills itself as the world's largest in-water boat show, brings more than 100,000 visitors to the city; the 2025 show was credited with $1.78 billion in economic impact for Florida.

Why people keep choosing it

Time together that doesn't happen anywhere else. A day on the water has no inbox and no commute. When the American Sportfishing Association asked anglers what they value most, the top answers were being close to nature (54%), getting away from the demands of daily life (50%) and spending time with family and friends (44%). Every owner we work with would recognize that list.

Evidence that water is good for you. Researchers call it "blue space". A 2021 study of more than 16,000 people across 18 countries found that people who spent time near water more often reported higher wellbeing and less mental distress, and a systematic review of water-based activities, from sailing to fishing programs for veterans, found they mostly improved psychological and social wellbeing. The research shows an association rather than proof, but it matches what boaters have always said.

A pastime that keeps growing. More women fish than ever, 21.1 million in 2025, up 34% in a decade, and 6.3 million people went fishing for the first time. Boating isn't a closed club; every year it brings in newcomers.

A lifestyle that changes as you do

One of the best things about boating is that the boat can change as your life does. Many owners start with a center console for fishing and sandbar days, move to an express cruiser when they want to stay aboard for a weekend, and step up to a motor yacht when the Bahamas become the plan rather than the dream. Some go further still, to long-range cruisers built to cross oceans.

With around four in five boats sold each year being pre-owned, the brokerage market is where most people find their boat.
